On Thursday, January 19, 2023, Genora Bell Burkholder Prewit, passed away peacefully, at her son’s home in Midland, Texas. Genora was born on August 5, 1927, in Barstow Texas to John G. and Gladys M. Burkholder. She graduated from Barstow High School in 1945 then spent a year at Texas Tech in Lubbock.
Genora married Neil H. “Skeeter” Prewit on June 12, 1949, after he returned from serving in the Navy during World War II. While employed by Welex-Halliburton, Skeeter and Genora were transferred to South America. They returned after six years to make their permanent home in Pecos, Texas. Genora worked at Grogan motors with her husband for several years. In 1983, Genora accepted a position as the curator of the West of the Pecos Museum. With the help of her assistant, Dorinda Venagas Millan, and many loyal volunteers, the museum grew to a focal point of the whole community as well as a world class tourist attraction.
While working at the museum, Genora was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Rodeo Parade and as Citizen of the Year. Genora retired from the West of the Pecos Museum in 1996, and in 2000, she and Skeeter moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, to be near her daughter. Except for two years at Manor Park in Midland, Texas, Genora has lived the last ten years in Spring Branch, Texas with her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed several visits a year to stay with her son and daughter-in-law in Midland, Texas. These were very special visits to her, because she also got to see
her precious nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends in West Texas.
