Jesse Stephens

Pecos

Jesse Stephens was born on February 5, 1926 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He moved to Alpine, Texas in the early 1930s, then Pecos about 1942, he graduated from Pecos High where he received the Dean Memorial award for excelling in athletics and academics. Jesse worked at local ice plant and power plant on weekends to pay for college, then would hitchhike to Alpine to attend Sul Ross on the weekdays. A hard way to his degree in math from Sul Ross, but that is what started his family on a more prosperous path.

He met his neighbor Lena Austin when he moved to Pecos and they were married in 1951. He served as a Cartographer in the Korean War, came back to Pecos after war and went to work for the electric company, where he retired over 30 years later as regional manager.

He was a businessman and owned businesses in Pecos, Monahans, and Fort Stockton.

He was good citizen. He was a member of the Jaycees, Lions Club , Church of Christ, was a Chamber of Commerce director, on the appraisal board, committee to get superconductor supercollider, worked on museum projects, was treasurer for rodeo board, and was long time member of the Old Pharte’s Club.

Jesse was a caring man. He cared for his mother, wife, mother-in-law, and brother when their health began to fail. Dedicated husband, supportive father, active citizen, productive man.
He lived a meaningful life, well. Well done ol’ Pop.

He is preceded in death by his wife; Lena Stephens and son; David Stephens.


At his request, there will be no funeral service.
