Jo Evalyn Fonville Cooksey, passed away on December 6, 2013 at the Pecos Nursing Home. She was born on June 28, 1933 in Novice, Texas and moved to Pecos, Texas with her parents at the age of 4.
Jo attended schools in Pecos and graduated from Pecos High School in 1950, the year she was elected band sweetheart. She attended Texas Tech University. In 1952 she married her high school sweetheart, Bill Cooksey. Bill was serving in the U.S. Navy and Jo spent her time between California and Pecos.
After the Navy, Jo and Bill moved to Peoria, Illinois where Bill attended Bradley University. In 1956 Bill graduated and they returned to Pecos where, Bill joined Jos family in the jewelry business.
When the children where young Jo was a stay at home Mom. She enjoyed cooking and spending time in the kitchen. Later she joined Bill full time at Fonvilles, taking care of buying and many registries. Jo enjoyed playing bridge and reading. After the children were grown she and Bill enjoyed golfing and traveling.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents John and Tene Fonville and her brother John Charles Fonville. She is survived by her husband of sixty one years Bill Cooksey. Three children, Jeannie and her husband Greg Johns of El Paso, Clay and Scott Cooksey of Odessa. Grandchildren Lauren Johns Kureska Colin, Johnathan Johns Tristan, Natalie Johns, Billy Cooksey, Logan Kaila, Tyler and Braden Cooksey. Greatgranddaughters Harper Katherine and Palmer Grace Johns.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Pecos Nursing Home. And a very special thank you to Emily Fernandes, Rosa Carrasco and Pat Wade.
A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church of Pecos on Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to the Alzheimers Association or the West of the Pecos Museum.
