It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jose "Joe" Mendoza, 76, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and cherished member of the Pecos community. Joe journeyed peacefully into eternity on the 18th of October, 2023, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love, devotion, and cherished memories.
Born in the small town of Pecos, Texas, Joe was a man of unwavering strength, kindness, and an unrelenting passion for family. Joe's passion for sports was evident throughout his life; delighting in the therapeutic swing of a golf club among the green hills and from a young age, he found solace in the game of baseball and softball. With dedication and talent, he played his heart out and continued to nurture his love for the sport by coaching his sons, Joe Jr. and Jaime, and countless little league teams and All-Star teams. Joe could always be found avidly watching baseball games, cheering on his beloved Texas Rangers, and passionately rooting for the Dallas Cowboys.
Beyond the sporting arena, Joe enjoyed exploring the world with his wife, Olga. They delighted in their travels, but it was no secret that their hearts truly belonged to the thrilling lights and sounds of the casino. It was often said that luring them away from the slot machines was more challenging than hitting a home run.
Joe was an active member of the Evening Optimist Club, his dedication leading him to serve as President for a period and as a devoted member for many years. For over 25 years, Joe worked as a skilled mechanic for Penzoil, showing his ingenuity and expertise in keeping the wheels of the community turning. Later in life, he transitioned to Maintenance at the Reeves County Detention Center, where he continued to be a reliable and valued team member until his retirement after 15 years of dedicated service.
Those that entered into the heavenly gates prior to Joe were his loving parents, Rafael and Ester Mendoza, his sweet, handsome grandson, Michael Mendoza, his brothers, Victorio Mendoza, Magdeleno "Neno" Mendoza, Frank “Kiko” Mendoza and his beloved Father in Law Victoriano Juarez.
Left to honor and preserve Joe's memory are his devoted wife, Olga J. Mendoza; his loving children, Joe Mendoza Jr. (Gracie), Cindy Celedon (Armando), and Jaime Mendoza (Frances), Azlyan Dominguez (John); his stepdaughters, Lori Gomez (Johnny) and Heather Gonzales (Alfonso Jr.); as well as his cherished grandchildren, Matthew Mendoza, Andrew Mendoza, Mia Mendoza, Gabriel Celedon, Patrick Celedon, Jason Martinez, Jaylynn Martinez, Ryan Mendoza, Jeffery Martinez, Heather Morales (Johnny), Jon Gomez, Jaylan Gomez and Zaylan "Ziggy" Gonzales; 5 great-grandchildren and 2 on the way; alongside them, his brothers, Santana "Red" Mendoza (Elisa) and Pedro "Pete" Mendoza, his lovely Mother in Law Ofelia Juarez and of course, his closest friends, Pete and Lorena Martinez, his beloved furbabies Molly and Ms. Nosey, and many extended family members and friends.
In celebration of Joe's incredible life, we invite friends, family, and members of the community to join us for the forthcoming funeral services. A Rosary will be held at the Pecos Funeral Home on the 23rd of October, 2023, at 7:00 pm, where we will gather to offer our final prayers for Joe's eternal peace. Prior to the Rosary, a visitation will take place from 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm, giving loved ones the opportunity to share their heartfelt goodbyes.
On the 24th of October, 2023, at 2:00 pm, a Mass will be held at Santa Rosa De Lima Catholic Church, where we will honor and celebrate the joyous memories Joe brought into our lives.
