Long time farmer, rancher and former Reeves County commissioner Marcos Martinez, Jr. passed away on May 27, 2018 in Pecos, Texas. He was known to his family and friends as "Junior".
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 29 from 1:00 -9:00 pm and a Rosary will be said at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, May 29 at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Saint Catherine Catholic Church with Father Jose de la Cruz Longoria officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Evergreen cemetery.
Marcos was born in Saragosa, Texas on August 14, 1934. He was the second of three children born to Marcos and Manuela Martinez. Marcos attended elementary and high school in Pecos, Texas and Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. He married the love of his life Mae Fitzgerald on November 23, 1953. He was a veteran and served in the United States Army stationed in Germany. In his younger years, Marcos competed in many rodeos and jackpots, with calf and team roping being his specialty. He was well known for his speed and consistency with a rope. He was a key figure in the West of the Pecos Rodeo and served as a Board of Director in the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame. Marcos served as Reeves County Commissioner for a total of 16 years and made many improvements to Reeves County during his tenure. His lifelong passion was operating and caring for Three Bar Farm and Ranch for over 50 years. Started by his father in 1949, Marcos continued the western tradition his father instilled in him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Marcos and Manuela Martinez.
Marcos is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mae Martinez of Pecos, Texas. His son, Jimmy Martinez and wife Sharlene of Stephenville, Texas, his son, Joe Martinez and wife Stacey of Pecos, Texas and his daughter Brenda McKinney and husband Clay of Pecos, Texas. He is also survived by his sister Lydia Meadows and husband Doyle of Albuquerque, New Mexico and sister Yolanda Hinojos and husband Armando of Pecos, Texas. Marcos is further survived by seven grandchildren, Clay Ryon McKinney and wife Analisa of Pecos, Texas, Lauren Hardman and husband Heath of Stephenville, Texas, Marcos Jake McKinney and wife Emily of Pecos, Texas, Sarah Wilkinson and husband William of Wink, Texas, Shelly Martinez of Midland, Texas, Trever Wilkinson of Gardendale, Texas and Ambree Martinez of Pecos, Texas. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren and numerous niece and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Clay Ryon McKinney, Marcos Jake McKinney, William Wilkinson, Heath Hardman, Jesse Guzman, and Trever Wilkinson.
Memorials may be made to the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame, Pecos, Texas.
